Eddie George showed that his skills far exceed that of just All-Pro running back and Heisman Trophy winner. Eddie is also a damn good poker player. The venue was an All-Star event at Drexler's Bar B Que and Grill in the heart of Houston on Saturday night and included celebrities from the world of sports, entertainment, and the World Poker Tour. Some notable attendees were Jeff Bagwell, Marcus Allen, Jerome Bettis, and Clyde "The Glide" Drexler. The entertainment industry was represented by Kato Kaitlin and Yanni among others.
The night began with an incredible Bar B Que buffet that can only be described as "So damn good, make you want to stand up and slap your mama." The tournament soon got underway as celebrities made their way to the stage for a little game of what else, Texas Hold'em as featured on the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. Each player started with $5,000 dollars in chips and played to the death for their chosen charities. World Poker Tour champions Phil Hellmuth and Chris "Jesus" Fergeson were among the notable professional poker players, but were handicapped and only allowed to start with $200 in chips to begin the tournament. The game soon heated up as Kato Kaitlin was one of the first players eliminated along with Marcus Allen. Phil Hellmuth soon went down due more to lack of gun power rather than skill. "It's just great to see people get so interested in the game of poker. The World Poker Tour has just been picked up for another two season which shows there is definitely a following." Phil later said.
Sports star Jeff Bagwell soon showed his competitive nature by throwing poker jabs across the table to try to take Eddie George and Jerome Bettis off their game, but with no avail. Having amassed a mound of chips on the table, Eddie George quickly began his power game of poker squeezing out Jerome Bettis for the title. The night ended with guest and celebrities mingling and conversing as the Silent auction capped off the night. Thanks to Drexler's for allowing the SportsCrew Hummer and staff all VIP access to this great event.
