Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 27, 2005 -- In 1949, poker legend Nicholas "Nick the Greek" Dandolos asked Benny Binion to facilitate him a challenge with the legendary Johnny Moss in a high-stakes poker marathon. Binion set up the match between Dandolos and Moss, asking only that the game would be played in public view.

After five months of playing every existing variation of poker there was, Moss ultimately won "the biggest game in town" and an estimated $2 million. When the Greek lost his last pot; he first stood up, he then bowed slightly, and said, "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go" and left to his room.

Surprised by the positive response of the public, Benny Binion retook the concept and created the World Series of Poker; launching its first edition in 1970. 3 years after, in the Oral History Project at the University of Nevada-Reno, Binion discussed the World Series with interviewer Mary Ellen Glass. "This poker game here gets us a lot of attention," he said. "We had seven players last year, and this year we had 13. I look to have better than 20 next year. It's even liable to get up to be 50, might get up to be more than that."
