Horse Racing Wagering

There are many different types of wagers that can be made at a horse track and many of the terms can be quite confusing to the beginer. Here is a list as well as an explanation to help you on your way to ebcoming a successful horse bettor.
 
WIN
Your horse must finish first, and you collect the win payoff.

PLACE
Your horse must finish either first or second, to collect the place payoff.

SHOW
Your horse must finish either first, second, or third, to collect the show payoff.

DAILY DOUBLE
You must select the winning horses of two consecutive races, usually the first and second and sometimes the last two races. Daily Double wagers must be made before the first race involved in the wager. Some tracks offer rolling daily doubles.

QUINELA
You must select the horses that finish first or second in any order to collect the quinela payoff.

EXACTA
You may select any 2 horses and bet that they will finish 1st and 2nd in order selected.

EXACTA - WHEEL
This bet involves two horses in the same race. The bet wins if the numbers played finishes first and second in any order specified. Combinations of numbers are allowed which are more popularly known as wheel . Wheeling is less costly, but is a more exacting type of bet. Use the wheel bet only if you can confidently reduce the winner to one or two horses. To wheel, you must specify the horse numbers to win, followed by the numbers for second.

Exacta Wheel Combinations:

Wheel 1 with 3 others - 3 bets
Wheel 1 with 5 others - 5 bets
Wheel 2 with 3 inclusive - 4 bets
Wheel 2 with 4 inclusive - 6 bets


TRIFECTA
You must select the three horses that finish first, second and third in exact order.

TRIFECTA - WHEEL
The trifecta wheel requires the bettor to spot the first, second and third horse in any specified order of finish. The payout on this bet is always going to be higher than an exacta or quinela because of the level of diffilculty involved. To wheel, you must specify the horse numbers to win, followed by the numbers for second, and the numbers for third.

Trifecta Wheel Combinations:

Wheel 1x3x3 others incl. - 6 bets
Wheel 1x4x4 others incl. - 12 bets
Wheel 1x5x5 others incl. - 20 bets
Wheel 2x3x3 inclusive - 4 bets
Wheel 2x4x4 inclusive - 12 bets
Wheel 2x5x5 inclusive - 24 bets


Exacta & Trifecta Box

Select any number of runners in your bet. The box will cover all possible combinations of those numbers. You collect on an "Exacta" box if any two selections finish first and second in any order. You collect on a "Trifecta" box if any three finish first, second or third in any order.
