TRICKS AND TRENDS TO SUCCESSFULLY KICK THE MAN'S ASS THIS NFL SEASON
5 USEFUL BETTING TIPS
By Will Gatten - SportsCrew.com Senior Analyst

There's nothing more beautiful than a perfect ellipse of a pig-skin thrown over 75 yards to fall right into the hands of a tight-end running into the end zone, with 57 seconds left on the clock to beat the other team -the one you hate- by 4 points... right? WRONG! How about the same perfect throw that will take your team to COVER a 3 POINT SPREAD and give you a winning bet? Now, THAT is beautiful... Told'ya champ, now pass a bratwurst and a beer... let's talk some football...
Fall is almost here and while the micro-skirts and see-thru tops go back in the closet, there are some benefits to it all... NFL is back on the tube! In a society were manhood is pushed to further limits of metro-sexuality (what the hell is that anyway?), it feels good to count on a Sunday ritual of meeting with your buddies to grill some burgers, grab a beer, watch a football game and bet on the freaking Pittsburgh Steelers again! Yes, having some action riding on the NFL team you like adds spice to your Sunday.
But hey now... As much as you can enjoy sweating a game, the idea is to actually WIN when you bet on the NFL... because quite frankly, champ, if you are an action junkie you'd be better off not betting at all. If you would like to see your winning percentage increased this coming NFL season, hang on tight... there are a couple of things we need to cover to make that happen.
If you intend to end up in the black at the end of the NFL season, you need to understand the one absolute truth about betting to win: there are NO shortcuts to being a successful NFL bettor . Beating the NFL is the result of the accumulation of small edges and gathering of quality information; and that takes time. If you want to beat the odds, you need to create a betting discipline and know your stuff. We will now look into some trends and tricks that have proven to be successful over the curse of time and that will help you get an edge and come up with a betting angle of your own.
Before we move on to the betting game, keep in mind that your biggest advantage will always be knowing your exact position in the game and playing that position as shrewdly as you can. Always, always bet smart! Now let's get the ball rolling:
1. Trick: Play Your Own Numbers - Get Your Own Info
As easy as this sounds, many bettors do pay for picks; and while I advocate for a free capitalist market where everybody can sell their kidneys if they want, we need to kill the myth of the all-knowing tout who brags to have an outrageous 60% -or higher- winning percentage. That, my man, is a marketing gimmick to have you pay for his coin-tossing. The few sharpies that do hit higher than 60% are betting, not touting... In the months to come, your radio will bombard you with '20-star-10-unit-super-mega-lock-of-the-century' games that 'can't miss'... dudes are coming through your XM radio receiver now, the same one you paid dearly for to get rid of all this crap in the first place. Pass on paid picks.
If you are going to bet on the NFL, bet your own numbers. There's no worse feeling than losing your money on the opinion of a self-proclaimed pick wonder, who for all I know, is throwing darts at random picks to see what hits. You're way better off if you spend some time everyday keeping up with injury and weather reports, historical trends, etc. The beauty of it all is that all you have to do is google for it... it's all out there on the web. Do your own research and come up with your own numbers.

2. Trick: Beat the Key Numbers - The 6 Point 2 Team Teaser (@ EV or better)
Of all the numbers you will see posted on NFL, there are 2 key numbers you need to know when betting on the sides and 1 key number when betting on totals; the rest is simply the bookmakers trying to do their job and create 2-way action.
When you bet on NFL sides the 2 numbers you need to look out for are '7' and '3' and '37' on the totals. A 6 point 2 team teaser will allow you to tease those spreads and move them 6 points on your favor. This bet type will allow you to capture both numbers 3 and 7 simultaneously, when used correctly.
Let's take a look at an example with 2 different hypothetical NFL match-ups:
Buffalo Bills +8.5 -105 / O 37 -110
NE Pats -8.5 -115 / U 37 -110
Philly Eagles -3 -115 / O 43 -125
Tennessee Titans +3 -105 / U 43 +105
Let's say you like the Pats and the Titans; then you have a potentially VERY profitable 6 PT 2 Team Teaser @ even money that could look like this:
6Pt 2TT:
NE Pats -2.5
Tennessee Titans +9
Risk: $100/Win: $100
With this bet you have effectively brought the Pats under the 3 point (field goal) mark and you have taken the Titans all the way up to be a 9 point underdog covering up to a possible touchdown win by the Eagles. All of this while at the same time, paying NO juice on that bet… That's a profitable wager right there my man. But if in this same case the favorite was -9, it wouldn't be recommendable to bet this teaser since you'd only be able to tease the favorite down to -3 and you'd be teasing the game with a possibility of it landing right on the number, hence having a push and losing the bet .
If you feel like teasing a side with a total on the game, then let it be co-related in the right way. When you pair up totals and sides, history has proven the most successful co-relation is either the favorite tied up with the 'over' on the game or the underdog tied up with the 'under'. Following that premise, you could get a teaser with two legs looking like any of the following combinations:
6Pt 2TT:
NE Pats -2.5
NE Pats O 31
Risk: $100/Win: $100
6Pt 2TT:
Tennessee Titans +9
Tennessee Titans U 49
Risk: $100/Win: $100
The number '37' for totals in NFL implies mostly 4 touchdowns (28 points) and 3 field goals (9 points). When you use this type of teaser on a total in a match-up that involves a team that was originally posted with a point spread of -7, you're effectively absorbing 6 points off the total with that bet; that means 2 field goals and a virtual 20% decrease of the posted total... that is value. Added value is what we're looking for.

3. Trend: Bet Live Dogs Playing Home
Road favorites are quite possibly the historically worst bet against the spread in the NFL, managing to cover the spread only 48-49% in the past. For some unknown reason, Mr. Blows and his buddies at ESPN like to support the 'public' teams; whether they play as locals or as a visiting team seems to be irrelevant for them. They will most likely dedicate the entire week to informing us how the visiting Pats defense is going to absolutely destroy the 2nd string QB playing for a home dog team, and how this mediocre team has zero chance of covering the spread - much less winning outright.
You know who loves the ESPN moronic comments the most? Bookies, they love it when the public bets on the favorite regardless of the team being 'on the road'. What's the result? - Inflated prices on the favorites. So, not only would you be making a terrible bet against historical odds if you lay your money on road favorites, you will actually pay gouged prices on them... why would you want to do that? When you notice that your buddies, the bagel dude, the ESPN morons and even your mother-in-law seem to be riding on the road favorite 'lock'... play the underdog. The home dog will take you barking all the way to the bank... bet the LIVE dogs. This is especially true for Monday Night Football match-ups!
4. Trick: Always Shop for the Best Line
I can't stress out this point enough: the importance of playing only at the absolutely best odds available out there is part of a winning betting pattern. Compare prices and always get down on the most advantageous line for you... in this game, ½ a point makes a world of difference.
VISIT THE BEST FREE LIVE BETTING ODDS PAGE ON THE INTERNET: SPORTSCREW.COM LIVE LINES
And finally, one last word on NFL betting:
5. Trend: Never Play Against the Move of a Line
This is actually self-explanatory and it should be very easy to understand. If you like the opening line on the Pats -6, but you cannot get down on it until the line has moved to -7 or -7.5... PASS on that line! If the betting syndicates have hit that line all the way up to -7.5, then you should never play against that move... never! That's what these guys do, they bet to earn a living... why would you want to bet against the opinion of a professional? If you miss your number, trust your instinct and let it go.
Now, if you absolutely have to hit that side, then tease it. Grab another leg and get down on a 6Pt 2 Team Teaser at even money...
Oops, you're all out of beer, champ... This is as far as we got with this. And please remember, these are only tricks and trends... nothing will ever replace your creativity when betting on the NFL. You cannot have a one-dimensional approach if you are striving to be successful. Stay creative and informed and you too should be kicking the man's ass this NFL season... when you do, punt kick it! Cheers...
