The Royal Post -- 11/06/06
Glance Back & Look Ahead to MNF

This weekend sports bettors were treated to great action from track to the gridiron. Saturday provided the Sport of King enthusiasts a stellar day of wagering on the Breeders Cup and football fans were dazzled with spectacular play. In this edition of The Royal Post we glance back at some of the weekend sports betting events, followed by a look at the MNF matchup between the Raiders and Seahawks.

Invasor sprints to Breeders' Cup win

Churchill Downs was the site for the Breeders Cup where Invasor got the better of Preakness champ Bernardini to score a dramatic win in the Classic. Invasor's win in America's richest race was the ninth in 10 career starts for the 4-year-old colt, whose only loss was in the UAE Derby in Dubai after he was purchased by Sheik Hamdan's Shadwell Stable.

When the two went eyeball-to-eyeball in the stretch at Churchill Downs and the crowd of 75,132 cheering, it was Bernardini who blinked as Invasor blew past for a one-length victory on a day of upsets and, in one race, tragedy.

Earlier, there was tragedy when the filly Pine Island was euthanized after breaking down on the backstretch during the $2.2 million Distaff. Fleet Indian, the favorite, also was injured in the race won by Round Pond, but was expected to recover.

There were several other big upsets. Miesque's Approval won the $2.1 million Mile at 24-1; 15-1 shots took the Sprint (Thor's Echo) and the Juvenile (Street Sense); Round Pond was 13-1 in the Distaff; and Red Rocks captured the $3 million Turf at 11-1.

No. 1 Ohio State Holds Off Illinois

No. 1 Ohio State started comfortably and appeared in control. By the end, the top-ranked Buckeyes were getting their first real scare of the season. The Buckeyes managed to hold off Illinois in a 17-10 non-cover win.

The Buckeyes (10-0 SU & 8-2 ATS) had won each of their first nine games by at least 17 points, but let this one get close as the 24 point favorites, just as rival Michigan did earlier in the day against Ball State as the 34 point favorites.

Note: Fresno State is the only team in the NCAA to have not cashed this year at 0-8 ATS.

Sunday, a great day of NFL action was capped off with a 27-20 Colts win over the Patriots. QB Peyton Manning didn't have to be perfect for the Colts to remain the only team with a perfect record.

He had plenty of help from a defense that had been far from perfect all season. With four interceptions -- the last ending the Patriots' final chance with 1:18 left -- Indianapolis improved to 8-0 SU.

With the loss by Chicago and coach Lovie Smith to Miami earlier Sunday, the Colts are the NFL's only unbeaten team.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Tonight, The Oakland Raiders look to win three in a row for the first time since the season of their last Super Bowl appearance when they travel to Qwest Field for a Monday night matchup against the sputtering Seattle Seahawks (4-3 SU & 2-5 ATS).

Oakland (2-5 SU & 3-4 ATS) hasn't posted three straight wins since a five-game run from Nov. 11-Dec. 8, 2002, en route to an AFC West title and the Super Bowl. Injury-riddled Seattle -- the Raiders' former AFC West rival -- is trying to avoid losing three in a row for the first time since Oct. 10-24, 2004.

The Raiders have the NFL's worst-ranked offense, failing to score an offensive TD in four of seven games and managing only 98 yards against the Steelers -- their second-fewest in a game since the 1970 merger.

Since taking over for the injured Aaron Brooks, QB Andrew Walter has completed just 47.3 percent of his passes, thrown nine interceptions and just three TDs while being sacked 28 times.

Oakland will try to avoid an unprecedented fifth consecutive Monday night loss SU. The Raiders lost 27-0 to San Diego on Sept. 11 and have been outscored 116-27 during their four-game slide on Mondays. The home team has won the last eight times these teams have met.

Notable game trends:
- Raiders are 17-38-1 ATS in their last 56 games overall.
- Raiders are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. win.
- Raiders are 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games as an underdog.
- Raiders are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 meetings.
- Seahawks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games.
- Seahawks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite.
- Seahawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 9.
- Home team is 6-0 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
